A Comprehensive Review on Efficacy of Medicinal Plants Used in Cough

Abstract

Coughing is a crucial, spontaneous or voluntary physiological defense mechanism that shields the human respiratory system from foreign body inhalation and excessive bronchial secretions. This article explores the relationship between cough which may be a symptom of underlying respiratory infection and the medicinal plants used to treat them. It also outlines the physiological, Patho mechanics of the cough reflex and its categorization criteria. It also focuses on how severe coughing impacts multiple anatomical system and also explores the underlying mechanisms of cough hypersensitivity. The main focus of the article is how the herbal plants are used in the treatment of cough which may be either in the form of expectorant, antitussive or demulcent.
