Comprehensive Review on Skin Related Diseases and Efficacy of Medicinal Plant

Abstract

Skin diseases encompass a highly diverse spectrum of conditions affecting the integumentary system, including the skin, hair, nails, and associated glands. They range from transient, mild disorders to chronic, debilitating, and potentially life- threatening conditions. The global burden of skin diseases is substantial, impacting nearly one-third of the world’s population and contributing significantly to morbidity, disability, and psychological stress. Etiologically, these disorders are multifactorial, arising from infectious agents (bacterial, viral, fungal), autoimmune mechanisms, genetic predispositions, environmental exposures, and lifestyle factors. Common dermatologic conditions include eczema, psoriasis, acne, vitiligo, alopecia areata, scabies, and various skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Patho physiologically, skin diseases often involve disrupted barrier function, altered immune responses, inflammatory cascade s, and, in some cases, neoplastic transformation. Clinical manifestations are diverse, including rashes, scaling, redness, pruritus, blisters, ulcers, pigmentation changes, hair loss, and nail abnormalities, which can lead to significant physical discomfort and social stigma. Accurate diagnosis relies on comprehensive clinical assessment, often supplemented by laboratory, histopathological, and imaging investigations. Management strategies are likewise multifaceted, including topical and systemic pharmacotherapy, biologics, phototherapy, surgical interventions, and increasingly, personalized approaches guided by molecular profiling and digital technologies. Recent advances in tissue engineering, nanofiber dressings, and targeted molecular therapies offer promising avenues for improved wound healing, scar prevention, and management of complex dermatological disorders. Despite significant progress, disparity persist in global access to dermatologic care, early diagnosis, and effective treatment, necessitating continued research, public health initiatives, and education to mitigate morbidity and optimize patients’ physical, psychosocial, and economic well-being.
