A Comprehensive Review on Peptic Ulcer Healing Potential of Medicinal Plants

Abstract

Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a common gastrointestinal disorder which occurs with due an imbalance between the aggressive factors such as gastric acid, pepsin, Helicobacter pylori infection and NSAID usage and the protective mechanisms of gastric mucosa. The conventional antiulcer drugs are very effective but their long-term usage might lead to adverse effects, recurrence, and high cost of health care. The medicinal plants are the alternative option because of the present rich phytochemical contents with the traditional therapeutic application. The potential of herbal remedies for the Peptic Ulcer Disease in this review article was reported. Many plants such as Allium sativum, Aloe vera, Annona squamosa, Azadirachta indica, Carica papaya, Curcuma longa, Mangifera indica, Ocimum sanctum, Piper betel Phyllanthus niruri, Zingiber off. have the used traditionally for the ulcer remedies. These plants have the anti-ulcerogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. These properties might be attributed for their therapeutic properties.
