Abstract
The history of mankind has been closely linked to the struggle of people against injustice, exploitation, and discrimination. The assertion of human rights is one of the most significant manifestations of this struggle. Human rights have acquired special importance in the changing global context, particularly in the post–World War II democratic era.
The post-war period has witnessed the rapid development of a human rights culture. The General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948. The domain of human rights has continued to expand in India. Many laws, institutions, and organizations have been established to ensure citizens a better standard of human rights.
The Protection of Human Rights Act was passed by the Indian Parliament in 1993 with the objective of safeguarding the fundamental rights of Indian citizens. It is in this context that the present study seeks to assess the role of newspapers in the protection and promotion of human rights.
