ROLE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) IN INDIANHIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM ##plugins.themes.bootstrap3.article.main## Abstract It has been commonly accepted and proven that information and communication technology (ICT) is the engine of the 21st century. The use of the Internet and the web as well as the emerging of different communication channels have brought the world closer and contributed to the concepts of globalization. This paper examines the use of emerging information and communication technology tools in teaching and learning of higher education. Higher education systems have grown exponentially in the last five decades to meet the demands of quality education for all. This aspect has further gained momentum due to swift advancements in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The focus of this paper is to examine the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in higher education in India in the 21st century. The increasing use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has brought changes to teaching and learning at all levels of higher education systems (HES) leading to quality enhancements in the 21st century.
