Abstract

The race from segregation to inclusion is a world-wide concern on the main streaming of differently able masses. In this race a new field of remedy is promptly built up which is otherwise named as community based rehabilitation approach (CBR). This successive approach generates a serious concern for all the educational agencies, governmental or non-governmental to think over it on how to pull the lever of the issue.

In 1951 the United Nations Rehabilitation Unit was established. This step further followed with establishment of other rehabilitation organization i.e. International Labour Organisation (ILO), United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the World Health Organisation (WHO). CBR may be defined as “A strategy within community development for the rehabilitation, equalization of opportunities and social integration of all people with disabilities” (UN, 2003).

It is an established fact that, the facilities of existing rehabilitation centers and educational opportunities are very few and is confined to urban areas only. But the majority of population is in villages and has no scope of availing any rehabilitation, curative or supportive services under the existing pattern and the nature of the services. So with the help of education we can make aware of all individuals about the provisions and facilities provided by the government. In this, the role of teacher is more important as S/He plays a major role in mass awareness. So the knowledge of CBR should be provided to all the teachers and teacher educators. In this regard the present paper will focus on the concept of CBR following with need for CBR. And last but not least it will discuss the role of teacher for success of CBR.
